Human Rights Education

Esteemed Colleagues:

“The promotion and protection of human rights is a basic prerequisite for the existence of a democratic society…” (Inter-American Democratic Charter). Human rights education is closely linked to education for democracy, citizenship and peace, among other similar fields.
In our hemisphere, and in the world, a great commitment has been formalized to promote human rights education, and we wish to applaud the important progress achieved. However, there is still a long road ahead to achieve formal and non-formal human rights education for all members of society, which promotes and protects human rights in our countries and in the world. This edition of the bulletin offers some resources to support this fundamental commitment.

Best regards,

Lenore Yaffee García

What is the Inter-American Program?

Structure of the Program

An interdisciplinary, cross-national Advisory Board of 40 members provides guidance for the Program, as does the Coordinating Group of Countries which each of the 34 OAS member states is invited to join.

Quote
“Human rights education contributes to the discovery of unknown worlds, like the suffering of others and indignation in the face of injustice (…) it is a bet for the future, with the end that later, neither justice nor liberty be claimed by gangs or invoked violently in the streets.” (Roberto Cuellar, Executive Director, Inter-American Institute of Human Rights. Taken from “Educación en Derechos Humanos: La Apuesta por el Futuro de la Democracia” Boletín Informativo IIDH, March – June, 2007).

About the OAS
The Organization of American States (OAS) brings together the countries of the Western Hemisphere to strengthen cooperation and advance common interests. It is the region's premier forum for multilateral dialogue and concerted action. Although the idea of Inter-American cooperation dates back much further, the OAS came into being in 1948, evolving from the Pan American Union. Countries from all around the world are permanent observers , closely following the issues that are critical to the Americas.
